"The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry."
~ Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell To Arms

"Our lives disconnect and reconnect, we move on, and later we may touch one another, again bounce away. This is the felt shape of a human life, neither simply linear nor wholly disjunctive nor endlessly bifurcating, but rather this bouncey sequence of bumping into's and tumblings apart."
~ Salman Rushdie, The Ground Beneath Her Feet

Some Poetry and Beauty...

"The girls in their summer clothes
In the cool of the evening light
The girls in their summer clothes, pass me by..." ~ Bruce Springsteen

"Put on your best dress baby,
And darlin', fix your hair up right,
Cause there's a party, honey,
Way down beneath the neon lights,
All day you've been working that hard line,
Now tonight you're gonna have a good time..."
~ Bruce Springsteen

“When the moon rises and women in flowery dresses are strolling,
I am struck by their eyes, eyelashes, and the whole arrangement of
the world. It seems to me that from such a strong mutual attraction the ultimate truth should issue at last.” ~ Czeslaw Milosz

"I am not a human being because I have a vascular system; I am a human being because I have been kissed..." ~ Tyler Blanski

"Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know." ~ John Keats

Divine Milieu...Mary Chapin Carpenter - Come On, Come On...

“It's a need you never get used to, so fierce and so confused,
It's a loss you never get over the first time you lose…”

~ Mary Chapin Carpenter

Anne Lamott - Some Thoughts...

“I have survived so much loss, as all of us have by our forties – my parents, dear friends, my pets. Rubble is the ground on which our deepest friendships are built. If you haven’t already, you will lose someone you can’t live without, and your heart will be badly broken, and you never completely get over the loss of a deeply beloved person. But this is good news. The person lives forever, in your broken heart that doesn’t seal back up. And you come through, and you learn to dance with the banged –up heart. You dance to the absurdities of life; you dance the minuet of old friendships.

I danced alone for a couple of years, and came to believe that I might not ever have a passionate romantic relationship – might end up alone! I’d always been terrified of this. But I’d rather not ever be in a couple, or ever get laid again, than be in a toxic relationship. I spent a few years celibate. It was lovely, and it was sometimes lonely. I had surrendered; I’d run out of bullets. I learned to be the person I wished I’d met, at which point I found a kind, artistic, handsome man. We get out of bed, we hold our lower backs, like Walter Brennan, and we laugh, and bring each other the Advil.”

~ Anne Lamott, Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith

Divine Milieu...Kris Kristofferson - Darby's Castle...

Not sure exactly why, but I woke up this morning with the lyrics to this Kris Kristofferson song in my head...once again so much truth and authentic life is manifested in a song. There is something deep and profoundly beautiful, albeit sad and melancholy in the words that Kristofferson has penned in many of his songs. The connection to the shared life and experiences of being human is what I believe is captured in his songs and for me in this particular one this morning.

There is something or perhaps in the course of a lifetime many somethings that cause us to break, to loose, to feign our strength when there is no strength...these words from a U2 song also were rattling in my soul this morning,

"Who's to say where the wind will take you,
Who's to know what it is will break you,
I don't know which way the wind will blow..."

Divine Milieu...Bon Jovi - The Right Side of Wrong...

"So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where a gang of scoundrels gathered around him and followed him." ~Judges 11:3

Life is not straight lines, clean, without any mess...sometimes life is lived on "...the right side of wrong..."

My Place Today...

Haven't worn cowboy boots for a long, long time. Tonight reminds me of nights 20 some years ago in east Texas at honky tonks. Strange feeling...at the risk of being cryptic...hmmm...not sure what to make of it all. Perhaps, it is merely the length of the day and me being tired? Or something else, more profound? Hmmm...I wonder what Catherine would think?

Gordon Cosby - Thoughts on a Tavern and a Church...

“…as Cosby reflected on the liveliness and interaction in a tavern compared to a dull church service he had just visited. ‘I realized that there was more warmth and fellowship in that tavern than there was in the church. If Jesus of Nazareth had his choice He would probably have come to the tavern rather than the church we visited’”

~ Gordon Cosby, Sr. Pastor and Founder of Church of the Savior as quoted in, Reviewing Leadership: A Christian Evaluation of Current Approaches by Robert Banks and Bernice M. Ledbetter

Rich Mullins Thoughts...Part I

“We have been travelling around now for about 15-20 years – do I look like it? Everyone always says, ‘You look so tired, can we pray for you?’ I’m like…man, if I didn’t look tired you should pray for me. I would have had to make a deal with the devil to not look tired. I deserve to look this way – I’ve abused myself as much as possible in the last 20 years, which is fine with me. Because I figure sooner or later life is going to kill us all – you might as well go out doing something you love to do, or eat something you like to eat – like cholesterol.”
~ Rich Mullins

Rich Mullins Thoughts...Part II

“Proof texting is a very, very dangerous thing. I think if we were given the scriptures it was not so that we could prove we were right about everything. If we were given the scriptures it was to humble us into realizing God is right and the rest of us are just guessing. Which is what makes the scriptures so much fun to read – especially if you’re not a fundamentalist.”

Theologian From New Jersey...

"Everybody's got a secret Sonny, something that they just can't face. Some folks spend their whole lives trying to keep it, they carry it with them every step that they take. Till some day they just cut it loose or let it drag 'em down..." ~ Bruce Springsteen

Liturgy...

There is a liturgy inherent in the lyrics of the songs sung in a bar - and that liturgy  resonants with the Imago Dei. Jesus is not beyond, but in the midst of our existence-hence the Incarnation.

ARE YOU READY TO RUMBLE??!!!

gb.JPG

That’s right ladies and gentlemen, my band (NDY) will be playing Friday night, Oct 8, at the Dugout Bar in Mahtomedi (Suburb of St. Paul), from 8 - 12. We play Top 40 Hits from the 70’s thru Today. Fine, we’re not U2, but WE SURE KNOW HOW TO THROW A PARTY.  And its for a great cause — kids in Haiti! Not only this, but now that I use  a metronome, we don’t end songs twice as fast as we started. (And some of you thought we couldn’t possibly improve!)

So spread the word, invite your friends and we hope to see you there.
