"The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry."
~ Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell To Arms

"Our lives disconnect and reconnect, we move on, and later we may touch one another, again bounce away. This is the felt shape of a human life, neither simply linear nor wholly disjunctive nor endlessly bifurcating, but rather this bouncey sequence of bumping into's and tumblings apart."
~ Salman Rushdie, The Ground Beneath Her Feet

Wide Awake...

“Listen to your life….because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace."
- Buechner

“This desperation, dislocation
Separation, condemnation
Revelation, in temptation
Isolation, desolation
Let it go and so to find away
To let it go and so to find away
To let it go and so to find away…”

-Bono

Haven’t written for a few days…I suppose I have been absorbing the experiences of the moments so that I can better appreciate them, as Buechner is correct in his estimation that all moments are key moments and there is much grace in life even when we may not be aware of it. It is always present in some way or ways.

When I woke up this morning I had this lyric from John Lennon in my head, “Life is what happens when you are making other plans…” and I am not sure why. Yet, it was there playing in my head over and over then the lines from U2’s song “Bad” began to intermingle with the Lennon song and maybe in someway life is truly like what was playing in my head.

It seems we become so caught up in plans, the future, even the past, so that we no longer know what it is to be in the “moments” and life happens to us regardless, it is relentless in its pursuit of us. So then it is in finding some sort of release, as Bono sings, “Let it go and so to find away, to let it go and so to find away…” and in this release the “moments” can be absorbed into your being. And not lost, so that the living of life does not escape but rather life is experienced in all of its potentiality and we are aware of the presence, the fullness and the beauty that is in life, in being alive, a human being. To be “…wide awake, not sleeping…”

  1. Death (sleep) is a state where all dwell until what? Until the hour comes when we choose life, choose Jesus, choose to rise again.
